Ben Houlton and UC Davis' John Muir Institute of the Environment was awarded funds from UC’s Carbon Neutrality Initiative (CNI), which has committed to reducing the UC system's net GHGs from its operations to zero by 2025. CNI seeks to develop new and support existing projects already on the carbon offset market.
CNI "projects can be located anywhere and must meet UC values by resulting in emissions reductions or sequestration that are high quality, reasonable-cost, and fulfill our mission of research, education, and public service. [CNI] are particularly seeking projects that expand or apply UC research, offer educational opportunities to students, advance understanding of scalable climate solutions, provide health and social justice benefits, and directly benefit or have resonance with the UC community and communities surrounding the UC campuses."
The Working Lands Innovation Center will use these funds to expand their soil amendment demonstration sites and to purchase equipment that will allow for the high frequency greenhouse gas measurements that will bolster their ability to quantify emissions and verify carbon sequestration across sites.
